Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear.

You can use it if you're just starting out. Pawn comes with advice from the experts (Ask Mr. Robot and others) who know that some stats are far more useful than others. Fire mages want a lot of crit, and shamans don't want strength at all, so just because that new ring has a higher item level, it might not actually be that good for your spec. Pawn will show you green arrows to help you spot the upgrades.

You can also use it if you run your character through simulations and build your own Excel spreadsheets: all of Pawn's stat weights are customizable so you can tailor it for your exact character and preferences. It's useful for all roles, not just DPS.

Reporting issues

If something doesn't seem to be working right, please send me a description of the problem, in addition to:

- The language that you play WoW in

- Which version of WoW it is (Midnight, Mists of Pandaria Classic, Classic Era, etc.)

- The specific items that don't work as expected

- Your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights

If you Alt+LeftClick on an item popup (whisper the item to yourself), you'll get a little popup that lets you copy and paste text from the item. At the bottom of that text is a command like this:

/pawn tooltip 12345:67...
If you copy and paste that for me, I can usually recreate the exact problem on my computer. That's the most helpful thing you can do for me if the problem is related to a specific item. Screenshots are always great too!

GAME FLAVOUR

This is a retail (modern World of Warcraft) build. It will not work in the Classic clients, which run a different interface API.

INTERFACE VERSION

Built against game version 12.0.7, 12.1.0. After a patch, an addon that has not been updated is flagged out of date; most keep working, and the "Load out of date AddOns" checkbox on the character screen lets you try.

DEPENDENCIES

Some addons need a separate library addon (Ace3, LibStub and friends) that is not bundled. If the addon does not appear in the list in game, a missing dependency is the usual reason.

1. Quit World of Warcraft completely. The game reads the AddOns folder at launch and will overwrite settings for an addon added while it is running.

2. Download the archive with the button on this page and unzip it.

3. Move the folder — the one with the .toc file in it, not the zip's wrapper folder — into:

World of Warcraft\_retail_\Interface\AddOns

4. Start the game. On the character selection screen, click AddOns and check that it is listed and enabled.

IF IT DOES NOT APPEAR

Nine times out of ten the folder is nested one level too deep. Interface/AddOns/Thing/Thing/Thing.toc will not load; Interface/AddOns/Thing/Thing.toc will.

UPDATING

Delete the old folder before unzipping the new one. Unzipping over the top leaves files behind that the new version no longer expects.
