Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE64)

Overview

The scripting extender that a large part of the Skyrim modding ecosystem is built on. Not a mod so much as a prerequisite.

The Skyrim Script Extender expands what Papyrus scripts can do and gives native plugins a way to hook the game. It is a launcher and a runtime library rather than a mod: it adds nothing to the game on its own.

WHY YOU NEED IT

SkyUI's MCM, RaceMenu, SSE Engine Fixes, powerofthree's tweaks, PapyrusUtil and a very long list of other essentials are SKSE plugins. Without SKSE they do not load, and several of them fail loudly on startup.

HOW IT WORKS

You launch the game through skse64_loader.exe instead of the normal launcher or the Steam play button. Steam users can point the game's launch options at the loader so the Steam button works normally.

IT IS VERSION-LOCKED. SKSE builds target one exact Skyrim runtime. When Bethesda patches Skyrim, SKSE breaks until the team publishes a matching build, and every SKSE plugin breaks with it — which is why experienced modders turn off automatic updates for Skyrim on Steam.

Distributed from the SKSE team's own site at skse.silverlock.org; the Nexus page mirrors it.

Requirements

Game versions
  • 1.6.1170
  • 1.6.1130
  • 1.6.640
  • 1.5.97
VERSION MATCHING IS EVERYTHING

Download the build for your exact Skyrim version. The site lists them separately for a reason, and a mismatched build refuses to start rather than running degraded.

STOP SKYRIM AUTO-UPDATING

On Steam, set Skyrim Special Edition to "Only update this game when I launch it" and launch through SKSE. An unattended Steam update is the usual way an entire modlist stops working overnight.

CONFLICTS WITH

Nothing. It is infrastructure.

SAVE GAMES

Removing SKSE from a save that used SKSE-dependent mods will break those mods, not SKSE itself.

Installation

1. Check your Skyrim version: right-click SkyrimSE.exe → Properties → Details.

2. Download the matching SKSE64 build from skse.silverlock.org.

3. Extract skse64_loader.exe, the .dll files and the src folder into your Skyrim Special Edition ROOT folder — beside SkyrimSE.exe, not into Data.

4. Install the Data/Scripts folder from the archive through your mod manager (Mod Organizer 2 users: add it as a mod, do not copy it in by hand).

5. Launch with skse64_loader.exe. In game, open the console and type getskseversion to confirm.

MOD ORGANIZER 2

Add skse64_loader.exe as an executable in MO2 and always start from there — launching the loader outside MO2 bypasses your entire virtual file system.

This release downloads from skse.silverlock.org, not from us, so there is no checksum to compare against. Scan the archive before you unpack it.
