The plugin editor and conflict detector every large load order eventually needs — read every record in every mod, see who wins, and patch it.
xEdit is one program that renames itself for whichever game you point it at: SSEEdit for Skyrim Special Edition, TES5Edit for the original, FO4Edit for Fallout 4 and so on. It loads your entire load order at once and shows every record in every plugin side by side, with the conflicts coloured.
WHAT IT IS FOR
Finding out which mod is actually changing a thing. Two mods that both edit the same NPC do not merge — the one later in the load order wins outright, and xEdit is where you see that and decide whether it is what you wanted. Anything you disagree with can be patched into a small plugin of your own.
The other half of it is cleaning. Bethesda's own master files carry deleted references and identical-to-master records that cause crashes and can undo other mods; "Apply Filter for Cleaning" and the Quick Auto Clean mode are the standard fix, and every serious modding guide has a cleaning step that means this.
It also runs scripts. The community has written hundreds for it — merging patches, generating compatibility plugins, batch-editing records — and they run against the loaded plugins in place.
This is a power tool with an audience of exactly one: someone whose load order has already gone wrong in a way the manager cannot explain. It is not something a new setup needs on day one.
ABOUT THIS LISTING
This page describes SSEEdit (xEdit) by ElminsterAU and the xEdit team. The description and screenshots are the author's own, imported from their listing on GitHub on 14 August 2026: https://github.com/TES5Edit/TES5Edit
Mythiq hosts no files for it. The download button goes straight to the release file on github.com, so you are downloading from the author's own host, not from a copy of ours.
The download count, rating and comments on this page start at zero and count Mythiq only. The source's own figures are not copied here — they measure a different site, and a number that cannot be checked against our own ledger is not worth printing.
Requirements
BACK UP FIRST
xEdit writes to your plugins. It keeps backups, but the habit worth having is your own copy of the Data folder before a cleaning pass.
RUN IT THROUGH YOUR MOD MANAGER
Started outside Mod Organizer 2 it sees the bare game folder and none of your mods. Add it to the executables list and launch it from there.
WINDOWS
Windows only. It runs under Wine, unsupported.
Installation
1. Download and unpack the archive anywhere — this is a standalone program, not a mod, and nothing goes in the Data folder.
2. Add SSEEdit.exe to your mod manager's executables list.
3. Launch it from the manager. It will read your load order and ask which plugins to load; the default (all of them) is what you want for conflict checking.
CLEANING THE OFFICIAL MASTERS
Use the SSEEditQuickAutoClean.exe shortcut, one master at a time, in the order the modding guides give. Do not clean Skyrim.esm itself — the current advice is to leave it alone and clean only Update, Dawnguard, HearthFires and Dragonborn.
This release downloads from github.com, not from us, so
there is no checksum to compare against. Scan the archive before you unpack it.

xEdit is crucial to our shared modding community and your contribution - no matter the size - is invaluable and deeply appreciated.

Steam VDF Parsing
Support for detecting the Steam libraries and reading installation paths for supported games directly from Steam. This will
only work for games purchased through Steam. Not shortcuts for games added to the Steam game list. This should alleviate
most occurrences where xEdit will fail to locate a game if it was moved after install, or if an update removed the registry
entries.
